Access Control Installation

The team has grown past the point where one shared key still makes sense. New hires need a way in before a manager arrives, and the current setup cannot tell one person's entry from another's.

In plain words

An exit door does not stop being an exit once it is wired into an access control system. A magnetic lock on that route is paired with a request-to-exit device so anyone leaving is never held up looking for a code, and it is tied into the fire alarm so an alarm signal releases the door on its own. The installation is planned around the building's exits from the start rather than added around them afterward, so the system controls who comes in without complicating how people get out.

The call
Something went missing from the storeroom over a weekend, and when you ask who was in the building, the honest answer is anyone with a key. There is no list, no time stamp, no way to narrow it down.

How the visit goes

Technician with a yellow cordless drill and thin screwdriver bit fastening a brass-colored lock plate on a dark paneled front door.
  1. Scene 1

Reading the door and the frame

Every opening gets a physical look before it gets any wiring. The locksmith checks what the door and frame are made of, which way the door swings, whether an electric strike will seat cleanly in the existing frame, and whether the door sits on a fire separation, which changes what can be added to it. A hollow metal frame, a wood door, and an aluminum storefront door each take different hardware, and a door that already sits loosely in its frame is noted before an electric strike or a magnetic lock is chosen for it, since alignment decides how reliably the lock releases.

  2. Scene 2

Wiring the openings back to a controller

Each controlled opening can send and receive several signals: a reader reporting a presented credential, a lock output that releases the hardware, and, where the configuration calls for them, a door position switch reporting open or closed and a request-to-exit input. The locksmith runs the wiring from each opening back to wherever the controller is mounted — as a home run, along a shared bus, or over the network on an IP or PoE device — labels each conductor at both ends, and terminates them into the controller's input and output boards. A building with several openings may share one power supply and battery backup sized to the combined load, or split the load across more than one supply.

  3. Scene 3

Keeping the mechanical override where it belongs

Where a controlled door has a mechanical override, that key is worth treating with the same care as any master key: held by a named person or two, not left in a drawer everyone can reach, and used mainly as a fallback rather than a daily habit. Because that key bypasses the electronic record entirely, using it routinely quietly undoes the audit trail the system was installed to provide, on any door where one is fitted. Keeping it for genuine emergencies is what keeps the electronic system the normal way in, and the key the backup it was meant to be.

What shapes the quoteMount Carmel Locksmith Pros

How many schedules and access levels are needed
A building with one schedule for everyone is quicker to configure than one splitting doors, hours and roles into several access levels, since each combination has to be set up and then tested on its own.
Whether any door is also a fire exit
An exit route on a magnetic lock brings its own hardware — a request-to-exit device and a fire alarm tie-in — while an electric strike paired with a free-egress lockset can meet the same one-motion exit without those extra components, unlike a purely interior door.
Electric strike or magnetic lock
An electric strike works with the door's existing latch and generally needs less additional hardware than a magnetic lock, which also calls for a request-to-exit device and, on an exit door, a fire alarm tie-in.

Locksmith FAQ

What happens to the doors if the power goes out?

Outage behaviour depends on how that opening was built: battery backup can be sized to carry the reader, the lock and the controller through a typical outage, so a brief power loss need not lock anyone out or, on a fire-alarm-tied opening, lock anyone in, but that backup and any mechanical key override are specified per opening rather than assumed for every door. Fail-safe hardware unlocks once power has been out longer than the backup lasts; fail-secure hardware stays locked, and what opens it depends on the hardware chosen.

What happens to our records if we later work with a different provider?

That depends on the platform: the entry log and configuration can live on a local controller and its on-site software, which stay with the business regardless of who installed them, or on a cloud-managed subscription service, where continued access and data export follow that provider's own terms. It is worth confirming at the time of installation which arrangement applies, so the business knows what happens to its records if it later changes providers.

Can visitors or contractors be given temporary access?

Yes, a temporary credential can be issued for a contractor, a cleaner, or a visitor with its own schedule and, where the system supports it, an expiry so it stops working on its own once the job is done. This avoids handing out a permanent code or a key that then has to be tracked down and collected afterward.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 59 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 59% of homes in Oshawa were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where most homes were built decades ago, doors often still carry their original mortise locks and brass knobs. That hardware can usually be cleaned, re-sprung and kept in service, with a modern deadbolt added above it for strength without losing the look.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Oshawa (2021 Census).Where houses and attached homes share an area, lockouts are as varied as the doors. A porch, a hallway or a shared vestibule each calls for a slightly different approach, and a locksmith used to all three arrives ready for whichever it is.
