Access Control Installation

The team has grown past the point where one shared key still makes sense. New hires need a way in before a manager arrives, and the current setup cannot tell one person's entry from another's.

In plain words

The installation is not finished when the last door is wired; it is finished once the business can run the system without the locksmith standing there. That means an administrator account handed over with full control, a walkthrough of adding and revoking credentials, pulling an entry log, and changing a schedule for a holiday or an event. Beyond that point, whether the installer keeps any support or maintenance access is a setting the business chooses at handover rather than something assumed either way, and every routine change to who can enter is the business's own decision.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

Taking stock of what is already on the doors

Many commercial buildings already carry some kind of lock, from a plain keyed lever to an older keypad system nobody quite trusts anymore, and the survey starts by identifying exactly what that is. A working mechanical lock can often stay in place as the override once an electric strike or reader is added, saving a step; a failing or unsupported electronic lock is usually replaced outright rather than wired around. The locksmith also checks which doors currently share one key, since that pattern often explains why the business wants individual, revocable credentials in the first place.

  2. Scene 2

Testing every opening before calling it finished

Each door is tested the same way regardless of how simple or complex its hardware is: a valid credential releases it, a disabled one does not, the request-to-exit device or push bar releases a magnetic lock on demand, and the door position switch correctly reports open and closed. Where a fire alarm interface is fitted, the locksmith confirms the lock actually releases when the alarm activates, not only when it is reset afterward. The battery backup is tested by removing main power briefly and confirming every door still behaves the way it is meant to.

  3. Scene 3

Keeping the battery backup and hardware ready

A controlled door depends on power reaching the controller, the lock, and the reader, so battery backup is worth specifying and sizing for that opening rather than assumed to come standard, so a short outage does not leave anyone locked out or, on a fire-alarm-tied opening, locked in. That backup, where fitted, is worth checking periodically, along with the request-to-exit device on any magnetic lock, since both need attention between visits; a fail-secure lock can stay locked from the secure side once power is gone even where people can still leave freely. A short test, a few times a year, catches a fading battery early.

What shapes the quoteMount Carmel Locksmith Pros

Fitting the mechanical override
Keying an override cylinder into the same system as the rest of the property's keys, rather than leaving it as an unrelated spare lock, takes coordination with whatever keying already exists across the building.
Network readiness for a networked system
A networked controller needs a suitable connection point and technology-department approval to join the building's network; where that is not already in place, preparing it is a separate piece of the job from the door hardware itself.
How much door and frame preparation is needed
A frame that already suits an electric strike needs less preparation than one that must be mortised, reinforced, or matched with a different strike body, and an older or non-standard door can add its own preparation.

Locksmith FAQ

What happens to the doors if the power goes out?

Outage behaviour depends on how that opening was built: battery backup can be sized to carry the reader, the lock and the controller through a typical outage, so a brief power loss need not lock anyone out or, on a fire-alarm-tied opening, lock anyone in, but that backup and any mechanical key override are specified per opening rather than assumed for every door. Fail-safe hardware unlocks once power has been out longer than the backup lasts; fail-secure hardware stays locked, and what opens it depends on the hardware chosen.

What happens to our records if we later work with a different provider?

That depends on the platform: the entry log and configuration can live on a local controller and its on-site software, which stay with the business regardless of who installed them, or on a cloud-managed subscription service, where continued access and data export follow that provider's own terms. It is worth confirming at the time of installation which arrangement applies, so the business knows what happens to its records if it later changes providers.

Can visitors or contractors be given temporary access?

Yes, a temporary credential can be issued for a contractor, a cleaner, or a visitor with its own schedule and, where the system supports it, an expiry so it stops working on its own once the job is done. This avoids handing out a permanent code or a key that then has to be tracked down and collected afterward.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 59 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 59% of homes in Oshawa were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Older housing means older frames. Wood that has settled for years leaves strikes slightly out of line, so a bolt drags or needs a lift of the handle. A locksmith expects this and brings the shims, longer screws and strike plates to correct it.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Oshawa (2021 Census). In mixed neighbourhoods, a family may move from an apartment to a house or the other way around. A locksmith who knows both kinds of door can rekey the old place for the next occupant and set up the new one on the same visit.
